Let’s be honest ... Calgary weather has commitment issues.
One minute, it’s golden-hour magic. Next, it’s snowing sideways and you’re questioning all your life choices (and whether you should’ve worn your parka and your cute hat).
But don’t worry, I’ve got you covered (literally, if it starts hailing). Here’s how to prepare for your fall photo session so we can make magic no matter what Mother Nature decides to do that day.
Step 1: Embrace the Layers
Fall sessions in Calgary are like a game of “fashion Tetris.” You’ll start the session in a cozy sweater, and by the time we’re halfway through, the sun will decide it’s summer again. Layers let you adjust — and they photograph beautifully.
Pro tip: sweaters, cardigans, and textured fabrics look amazing in photos. Avoid neon colors (unless you’re trying to summon the Northern Lights).
Step 2: Expect the Unexpected
If you’ve lived here for more than five minutes, you already know: Weather forecasts in Calgary are more of a suggestion. It can go from +18 to –3 faster than you can say, “where did the sun go?”
So don’t stress — we’ll roll with whatever happens. Some of my favorite sessions have been in moody skies, surprise snow flurries, or that five-minute sunset that appears out of nowhere.
Step 3: Keep Everyone Warm (and Happy)
Cold hands = cranky kids = fewer smiles. Bring hand warmers, a blanket, and maybe even a thermos with something warm (bonus points if it’s hot chocolate — instant bribery). For babies: tuck a little fleece undtuck a little fleece under their outfit. It doesn’t show, but it keeps them cozy while we sneak in those adorable smiles.
Step 4: Dress for Fall… but Make It Cute
Stick with earthy tones — think rust, camel, cream, olive, denim, and soft browns. They look timeless and blend beautifully with Calgary’s golden grass and ever-changing skies. Avoid solid black for everyone, or busy patterns and logos. We want your family to stand out — not your kid’s “Minecraft Champion” hoodie.
Step 5: Trust the Process
Whether it’s sunny, snowing, or “mystery precipitation,” I’ll guide you through it all. We’ll laugh, play, and capture those in-between moments — the ones that feel like your family, not a Pinterest ad.es.
And if we end up with photos in every season’s wardrobe? Congratulations — you’ve just experienced authentic Calgary fall.
Bring your sense of humor, embrace the chaos, and remember: the weather may change, but the memories (and photos) will still be beautiful.
